Exam Week

This is a very important week at SBEC! Everyone is preparing for the exams that we take before we leave for Christmas Break. This could be a very stressful time for us, but with all of the help and preparation we have from the teachers, it isn't as difficult. As the first semester is finishing, the teachers are becoming more encouraging, reminding us to finish strong and do the best we can. I am very thankful for them!

It is also an accomplishment to see all of the hard work that we have done this semester pay off. Now we can relax and spend time with our families and celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior! As we leave for this Christmas Break, I hope everyone remembers the reason for the season. Merry Christmas! "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Luke 2:14

Being Involved

One thing I love about SBEC is the ability to become involved. It seems that there is something for everyone! One club that was started this year is called the Movement Club. The Movement is a club associated with Show Hope, an orphan care organization. This club is made up of students who are willing to stand up and help in the fight to end the orphan crisis. The Movement Club is unique because other students across the nation are starting these clubs. It is very cool to know that there are hundreds of other students in schools throughout the United States who want to lead others in caring for orphans.

Another organization I have been involved in at SBEC is the Student Council. This past week we had the opportunity to go on our annual trip to the Angel Tree Warehouse. We arrived at the warehouse and quickly went to work sorting toys and bikes for children. We had a blast, and it is something the entire Student Council looks forward to every year! We not only got to spend time together, but also helped others in the process.

We left the warehouse exhausted. However, it was not without smiles on our faces, thankful for the way God used us! I could very easily go on and on about the various activities SBEC has provided me over the years. These are just two examples of the many opportunities SBEC provides as a way to get involved.

Thanksgiving Break Week

Although it is a short week at SBEC due to Thanksgiving break, a lot will be happening on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday, the drama department will be taking down the set of Father of the Bride, the SBEC fall production. I attended the play over the weekend, and the hard work the cast and crew put into their production really paid off. I cannot wait for the spring musical!

Also on Monday, in Computer Applications II, many students will be turning in a resume project, including myself. Mrs. Mahony teaches us many things that are applicable to our future. I just learned how to correctly write and format a college essay. As a senior applying for colleges, this skill was very useful!

On Tuesday, the cafeteria will be serving a Thanksgiving feast for which many students are extremely excited. I know I will be purchasing my lunch in the cafeteria that day! In addition, Mrs. Milligan’s Microbiology class will be taking a chapter test on the control of microbial growth. Although testing is not always fun, I am very thankful we are testing before the break, so we will have a homework-free Thanksgiving holiday!

Over Thanksgiving break, I know I will consider SBEC one of the many things for which I am thankful!

Spiritual Emphasis Week

I’m thrilled to write about this week! It was an amazing, very uplifting, and eye-opening week at school. Because it was spiritual emphasis week, we had a chapel on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Our speaker was former SBEC Bible teacher Dr. Mark Livingston who currently serves as the senior pastor at Keltys First Baptist Church in Keltys, Texas. Joining Dr. Livingston as our worship leader was former student Landon Ditto, currently the senior high youth director at Grace Evangelical Church in Memphis, Tennessee.
The messages were centered on the theme of “Authentic Faith.” Dr. Livingston stressed what that kind of faith looked like. His scripture for Wednesday was James 4:13-17, through which he explained how students could maximize their life. Also on Wednesday, senior Adalenne Cole spoke of her growing dependence upon the Lord as a result of her diagnosis and the successful treatment of cancer.

In addition to being spiritual emphasis week, it also was a normal week. In my schedule I have some challenging classes like chemistry, but the teacher is so great it’s an enjoyable class. I feel so blessed to go to this school filled with amazing opportunities and a Christian environment.

Fall Break Week

Due to fall break, we had a short week at SBEC, but it was awesome! In the 11th grade, the English class is busy trying to finish reading the wonderful novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Everyone who is trying to stay with Mrs. Anderson’s homework schedule and not read ahead is just about dying to find out what happens. In American History, Mrs. Tapp led us in a game similar to Jeopardy to prepare us for our test on Tuesday. We were testing on the three branches of government, Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. Did you know that there are 535 members of Congress? Well, the 11th grade does! In Clothing Construction 1, we are learning the basics of sewing by making different styles of aprons. Throughout this short week, we sewed buttons onto our pockets and sewed our pockets onto the bottom portion of the apron.

The SBEC marching band has been working really hard on their show this year, Duty, Honor, Country. Although there is no competition this week, we still worked hard to perfect the show for next weekend’s competition at Southaven High School.

The Drama department continued to practice every day to get ready for the opening performance of Father of the Bride, our fall play. On Monday, we blocked act one and on Tuesday we blocked acts two and three. Then on Wednesday, we began the first of many run-throughs of the entire show. The cast of the show is thrilled and definitely cannot wait for the performances. Come and see the show on November 15, 16, and 17.

Wednesday was probably the most exciting day for the high school girls. SBEC had its second year of powder puff football! This year included a game pitting the freshmen girls against the sophomores! Wednesday was one of those days that we were just too excited to think about anything else, and I think the teachers could tell. After second lunch all the players hurried to get dressed and prepared for the games. In the freshmen vs. sophomore game, the freshman came out victorious as Kendall Kimberlin made two interceptions. Although the junior and senior girls were all a little tense before the game, we had a really fun and super competitive game that ended with a 14-14 tie. In the end both grades were actually happy about the outcome. We not only enjoyed the powder puff games, but also enjoyed the special commentary by Ms. Holbrook and Mrs. Anderson. Thanks so much to them!

We had a wonderful week at SBEC and look forward to many more!

Homecoming Week

This week is homecoming week at SBEC; it is such fun. The students participate in special activities and are allowed to dress up differently each day. The first dress up day is reserved for the seniors to dress up as a favorite character from their childhood. The second dress up day is commercial/brand day where students are allowed to dress up as something that might be on a commercial or advertised for sale. The third day is nerd day on which students wear nerdy clothing and mismatched outfits. The fourth day is old person/toddler day. On this day students may dress up as an old person or as a toddler. On Friday, spirit day, everyone dresses in spirit wear and jeans. On this day the seniors make a grand entrance into the school and each grade receives a different lunch and eats together. After lunch all the high school students go to the homecoming pep rally where selected students play in different games and most guys participate in a guy cheerleading contest. At the end of the pep rally a spirit stick is awarded to the grade that showed the most spirit. Later that night many students go and watch the football game. At halftime the band performs and the 2012 football homecoming queen is announced.

Computer at SBEC

Although Computer Applications 1 is a required course to graduate, I also took it this semester to learn the many exciting possibilities as a result of using the computer. Mrs. April Mahony taught us many different things in Microsoft Word. She gave us an assignment to create a menu for a restaurant inspired by a theme or country. This tested our knowledge of fonts, design, layout, and color as well as the use of margins, tabs, and spacing. My inspiration was from the country of Greece. As I created this menu, I learned so much about Word and the country of Greece. It was an amazing experience to learn about the culture of Greece through this fun project!

Classes at SBEC

Recently, I took Mrs. April Mahony’s Computer Application II class. The class was fun and I learned something new each day about how to properly and efficiently use computers.

One week, Mrs. Mahony taught our class how to properly write letters to colleges and or businesses. I thought I knew how to properly format and type a business letter, but I found out how much I didn’t know about this. Later that week we received an assignment to properly write a business letter to a college or business. I chose to write my letter to Mississippi State University. The requirements for the letter were simple. I had to make sure I had actual questions and true information regarding my purpose for writing the letter. I did not mention in my letter that I was writing it also for an assignment.

The exciting part of this project was the response I received from a representative of the college. I received a letter, and several brochures of information regarding the veterinary program Mississippi State has to offer students. I was so excited because I didn’t know I would receive a response so quickly with so much information. I highly recommend learning everything you can about proper computer etiquette, because later in life it will be an important asset.

Last Week at SBEC

On April 16, band members and chaperones arrived back on the SBEC campus from a 5-day trip to Washington, D.C. where the band marched in the 100th annual Cherry Blossom Parade. We were chosen as a result of band auditions from around the country. Marching in the parade was a lot of fun and I even met some new friends at the practices for the parade. Although this is my freshman year at SBEC, the students in the band and color guard have helped to make this a great year.

Although all of my classes this year have helped prepare me for college, Computer Applications 1 has been particularly important. My computer teacher, Mrs. April Mahony, has helped me and the other students do excellent work on the numerous projects we have during her course. One of our projects was to write a business letter to a welcome center. I chose to write to the welcome center in San Bernardino, California. In my letter, I asked several questions about their town and what attractions I should visit. Last week, I received a Visitor magazine and brochures about the city. I thought this response was really cool.

SBEC is a great school to attend; they offer many interesting and helpful classes.

This Week at SBEC- Senior Edition!

As a senior who has spent thirteen years of her life in these hallways, it’s extremely difficult to imagine graduating any time soon. However, the “Senior Countdown” has under thirty days left! It’s absolutely crazy.

For the majority of the students, this week at SBEC will be business as usual: tests, homework, quizzes, practices, games, you name it! While I might be doing some of the same things, for me, the remainder of this week will be very surreal.

This Friday, I, along with the rest of my graduating class, will be filming a portion of our senior video…in our caps and gowns! We’ll do things like form the number 2012, throw our caps in the air, and walk down the aisle similar to when we leave the sanctuary after graduation. Words cannot describe the immense emotion accompanying this filming day!

Another senior tradition takes place this week: the turning in of the “Senior Wills.” At the end of the year, all the seniors write notes in the form of a legal will to their underclassmen friends as a way to say goodbye. Filled with silly jokes, funny memories, and exciting plans, these wills are so much fun to write! Reflecting on all these memories makes me gladder that I came to SBEC.

I’m so excited to finally partake in the senior activities this week. I think I’m finally ready to graduate, but I don’t think I would be if I hadn’t gone to school here! The teachers, students, and administrators that surround me daily have helped shape who I am today. I couldn’t possibly imagine attending any high school besides SBEC. I’m so thankful my parents, under God’s leadership, placed me here!

I’ll leave you with a piece of encouragement: excel in all you do. It is worth far more than you could imagine. One day, you’ll be in my shoes, reflecting on all you’ve done and been taught here, and words won’t be able to describe the feeling of joy that overcomes you in that moment.

“I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:14

The Beginning of Spring at SBEC

Upon our return from spring break, all of my friends were sharing about the exciting trips they had taken. This spring break was very special for me because I spent it with the International Biblical Studies mission team in Costa Rica. In reality, International Biblical Studies (IBS) is a class at SBEC that is geared toward missions and prepared us to share the gospel abroad.

On this trip, my classmates and I were able to help clean up a local church, and my team in particular helped to build office space. Additionally, we were able to share the love of Christ with Costa Rican children through Bible studies and crafts. This time was very special for us because we were able to witness the Lord being worshipped in another language. This experience showed us His sovereignty over all nations.

I am very thankful that I was able to participate in this mission trip because of the numerous opportunities I had to serve Christ throughout the past week. I am extremely blessed to have teachers and administrators who were willing to give up their spring break to spend it with us, and this trip would not have been possible without our fantastic faculty. This was just another not-so-normal week in the life of SBEC!

My Normal Week at SBEC

The title of my blog is a little deceiving since this past week was no ordinary week for me or the school. Last week our drama department presented Oklahoma! The Great American Musical. I am a thespian and very involved in the theatre productions. For this show, I served as the costume mistress. I have had so much fun working with my friends and our fearless leader Ms. Judy DeFrehn, the high school drama teacher, to present a fantastic show!

Except for Wednesday, we had performances every night beginning at 7:00 p.m. This schedule meant that we arrived at the school at 5:00 p.m. and left at 10:00 p.m. every night. In addition, we presented a matinee performance on Friday morning and again on Saturday afternoon. The amount of time spent together allowed the entire cast and crew to become very close. We now think of each other as part of one big family. I am very thankful for a school that provides me with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular actives such as the theatre where I can get to know so many people that I otherwise probably would not have known well.

In addition to being involved with the drama department, I am also the secretary/treasurer of the student council. One of my job responsibilities is to sell snacks to the student body every morning between second and third periods. This is one of the highlights of my day since many random and interesting conversations can occur at the snack cart.
